Mitt engelska tal - Online Bullying

Have you ever been bullied? Now imagine not being able to avoid it. Not in school, not at home, not anywhere. Victims of bullying can’t avoid being bullied because of many reasons. Personally, I believe there are three main reasons why. Thanks to the Internet, the bullies are now able to reach and bully their victims every hour of each day, the bullies then don’t have to deal with the consequences they cause and the problem isn’t solved by anyone.

Bullying has been a long and on going issue for youth around the world. According to the website “Do Something” two out of three teens are physically or verbally harassed every year. But before the Internet played a big part in people’s lives, bullying occurred primarily in school or on the playground. As soon as school was over for the day so was the act of bullying. Nowadays, not only are youth able to log on and bully people, they are also able to do it anonymously. Therefore the bullies don’t have to deal with the consequences they may cause, and because of that, it makes the act of bullying easier for them. The victims, on the other hand, can’t get away from it. Not even in their home.

Meet Peter the bully. Peter comes home from school one day, and decides to log on to the internet to write a mean comment about someone, and the following minute Peter doesn’t have to be responsible for this action. It is discussed that one of the main reason why cyber bullying is so common is because bullies are not held accountable for their actions. Peter here, he can be anonymous or even create a fake account to avoid the consequences of his bullying. Bullies like Peter can therefore say whatever is on their mind and get away with it. They don’t even have to see the impact or reaction their own actions lead to.

The problem isn’t solved by anyone. Because who is responsible to solve this remaining issue? Is it the victim? Is it their parents? Or is it their school? Actually the school doesn’t take responsibility when cyber bullying occurs, and it’s hard to blame the school for something happening online while the students are at home. According to my sources it is said that even if schools try to get involved by disciplining cyber-bullying actions that occurred after school hours, they could very likely be sued for violating the students’ right of free speech and for exceeding their authority. Which in most of these cases, they lose. The problem therefore remains.

It’s crucial that this issue gets more attention and is being prioritized since the effects from bullying can be horrendous. At this very moment, cyber bullying is almost impossible for the victims to avoid. In the introduction of this speech, I asked all of you if you’ve ever been bullied. When I was a child, I got a nudge in my back every single day, because my first name was the same as the board game “Fia med knuff”. Personally, if I were in these kids’ situations today I would want every single one of you to help to solve this problem. I therefore encourage everyone that when you leave this room today, leave with this quote in mind “We need to teach children and each other that silence, when others are being hurt, is not acceptable. If we don’t allow the bullies to use us to embarrass or torment others, cyber bullying will quickly stop.”

Thank you
